7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

About a month ago I read the book 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker. I had been hearing good things about the book since early this year and finally decided I didn’t want to wait any longer to read it.

I liked it so much that I finished it in a couple days and considered buying it for everyone I know. I was  THAT inspired by it.

It’s hard to do it justice in a short summary, but I’m going to try. The inspiration for the author to write this book came after housing a family that had been displaced after hurricaine Katrina and overhearing a young boy exclaim, after seeing their house, that they were rich. Her eyes were opened to how much they really had. After thinking and reading and praying for a while, she decided to focus on 7 different areas of excess in her life. She did one a month for 7 months. For each month she limited herself to 7 choices in that area.  The purpose was to “create space for God’s kingdom to break through.” I wrote down this quote from the introduction:

 “Jesus, may there be less of me and my junk and more of You and Your Kingdom.”

The 7 areas were: Food, Clothing, Possessions, Media, Waste, Spending and Stress.

Have you read this book? I would love to hear your thoughts on it. It you haven’t read it, you should! I promise it’s not a hard read. I laughed a lot, cried a little and it made me think more deeply about how I’m living my life.

Fit Friday: Weigh-in 9

The past 7 days have been busy. Last weekend I took of to KY for a retreat with women from our church. I had a really good time. Of course I needed a nap when I got back, but that’s how it is with these things 🙂

I worked hard to choose food wisely. There were bowls of candy and pretzels and popcorn sitting around all weekend and I resisted for the most part. I ran when I got back on Sunday night, but didn’t really get any other exercise in this week. I’ve been feeling anxious. I’m not sure what that is about.

Today’s results: .2 lbs loss

Two weeks in a row of weight loss? It’s not much, but I’ll take it. This is harder than I thought it would be. I know the Friday accountability is helping though!

Fit Friday: Weigh-in 8

After last Friday’s terrible results, I was determined to turn the momentum around. I changed some things and I enlisted Nathan as well. He was agreeable to the plan- Yeah!

This is what we did this week:

  • I made a specific plan and wrote it down on paper.
  • No more starting the day with cereal. Sure it’s “fortified” with lots of vitamins, but so many of them have tons of ingredients that are unrecognizable and too much sugar.
  • We made sure that breakfast and lunch were healthier and less processed foods. Instead of cereal for breakfast, we had oatmeal (homemade) sweetened with some honey  or we had eggs. For lunch, we had salad with mixed greens, beens, green peppers, tomatoes, chicken and guacamole.
  • We used to just snack on whatever we wanted as long as we had calories available, but this week, we decided that only one small snack a day could be “free” (whatever we want) and any other snack would need to be healthy (fruits, veggies, nuts, etc…)
  • NO POP/SODA. Sure, we drink diet soda, but it’s still not great for us. We focused on drinking more water.
  • I tried a new type of exercise (and so did Nathan). We did BURST training:

The Burst training was hard work, but it wasn’t a ton of time. I decided to use it with my running. Instead of the exercises in the video, I did 6 intervals of sprinting to get my heart rate up for 90-100% effort.  I can totally feel it in my muscles. Nathan and I both had this elevated “runners high” and more energy for more than a day afterward. This isn’t to say that there are no benefits to long cardio sessions. This just works your body a little different. I think it will work really well in addition to any other exercise.

Fall in Tennessee

It’s been cool enough to have the windows open. Unfortunately, I had to close them today because someone came over and said the dog barking was “bothersome” to them. We are dog-sitting and having an extra dog makes the barking more than normal. Mostly, it’s just when people walk right by our front door with dogs. That sort of thing happens when you live in a townhome though.Max barks when a dog walks by. That is usually the only time. After the man came and complained to me this morning, I felt so defeated. I was so excited about the beautiful weather and the open windows and a trip to the park this morning, but after he left, I closed all out windows and the blinds so that the dogs would be less likely to see something that would make them bark and wondered if I should just stay home to make sure the dogs weren’t barking. Then I thought about how much I miss living in a home of our own. I had to really work hard and pray to get myself pulled together so I didn’t let it ruin my day.

We did go to the park and it was gorgeous out (sorry MN- I saw that your high temperature was 10 degrees warmer than ours today) and later we did our school work.
